Decorative beamsWPC(2.4 × 1.6, 3.9 × 2 and 4.7 × 2.4 in)

Co-extruded WPC beams for outdoor spaces, in three sizes and one length. Get the look of wood on pergolas, privacy screens and facades.

Extrutech decorative beams are hollow, wood-look WPC beams built for outdoor spaces. Use them to dress up a facade. Divide two outdoor areas with a wall of beams that lets air and light through (a privacy screen). Or build an open roof of beams set side by side, as close together or as far apart as you want (a pergola). Put them in front of a wall or window for partial shade that doesn't close in the space. They come in three sizes and are built to stay out in the elements.

These beams are a decorative cover and are not load-bearing. Every project needs an internal frame of steel, steel tubing or treated lumber to carry the weight. The WPC beam wraps that frame and gives it the look of wood.

Pergolas and screens: shade and privacy, open to the air

A beam pergola turns a patio that gets full sun into a shaded spot without roofing it over. The beams filter the light the way a tree does, and the space stays open. Add lights, curtains or a shade sail to the frame later, and the home finally gets the outdoor room it was missing.

A privacy screen takes care of the view. It blocks sight lines from the street or the neighbors and still lets air and light through. You don't need to enclose the whole perimeter. Just screen the side that faces out and keep the view you want.

From a backyard corner to a hotel pool: the same beam, sized to fit the space.

Three sizes: how heavy should the beams look?

All three beams are the same length and install the same way. Which one you use depends on the scale of the space—how thick the beams need to look from below to keep the pergola or screen in proportion.

The 6x4 (2.4 × 1.6 in): compact

For privacy screens, outdoor dividers and residential pergolas that need visual rhythm without bulk. It's the lightest of the three, which helps when your crew is working overhead.

The 10x5 (3.9 × 2 in): mid-size

When the 6x4 looks too thin and the 12x6 looks oversized, the 10x5 hits the sweet spot. Use it for pergolas over large patios, partially covered carports and common areas in residential developments—places where the pergola needs to look substantial without overpowering the space.

The 12x6 (4.7 × 2.4 in): large-scale

On a large pergola—a hotel terrace, an outdoor lobby—the beams are the first thing people see, and they set the tone for the whole place. A thin beam gets lost at that scale. The 12x6 stays in proportion and holds its own. For large projects we also make custom lengths, so there are fewer cuts and less waste on site.

A steel frame inside, wood-look WPC outside

All three sizes use the same system. The frame that carries the load is steel—square or rectangular tubing—or treated lumber, and the WPC beam covers it as the finished face. From the ground, the pergola looks like it's built with wood beams. Inside, it has a frame designed to handle wind and its own weight.

For a home pergola, the steel fabricator builds the frame from steel tubing, and the 6x4 or 10x5 goes over each member. For large-scale projects, an engineer designs the frame—W-beams, HSS or trusses—and the 12x6 wraps it. Either way, end caps close off the beam ends for a clean finish and protect the cut ends from the weather over the years.

Max Shield cap: no stain, no sealer, no repainting

Natural wood outdoors needs stain or sealer every 12 to 18 months. On a hotel or plaza pergola with dozens of beams, that cost comes back year after year and adds up.

WPC beams never need stain, sealer or paint—just a pressure wash with mild soap. The Max Shield cap is co-extruded with the beam (it isn't paint), and we get the matte look without brushing, so the cap is never worn down to create it. Our in-house quality lab tests production samples of every size.

One color for the deck, the ceiling and the pergola

All three beams come in the same 12 colors as Wall Cladding and Grooved Panel, and Solid Deck comes in those same 12. A project with decking underfoot, cladding on the ceiling and beams on the pergola can use one color throughout—say, Teka—or mix colors by design.

We make everything in the same plant with the same formula, so the color matches from piece to piece and batch to batch. Reorder next season and it still matches, and you never have to eyeball wood from different suppliers. See the 12 colors →

Vertical or horizontal

Set vertically, a screen makes a facade look taller. Set horizontally, it makes the space look wider.

Frequently asked questions about outdoor Decorative Beams(WPC beams for pergolas and screens)

Don't see your question about the Decorative Beams? Send us a message and we'll get back to you shortly.

Are the decorative beams structural?
No. They're decorative only, not load-bearing. The frame inside and behind them carries the load—steel, steel tubing or treated lumber, designed to handle wind and the weight of the pergola. The WPC beam wraps that frame and gives it a wood face. Don't use them as structural beams or to hold up a full roof. Use them for pergolas, privacy screens and decorative features.
What does "three sizes" mean?
Three cross-sections, not three lengths. All three beams are 9.8 ft (300 cm) long, and only the width and height change: 2.4 × 1.6 in (6 × 4 cm), 3.9 × 2 in (10 × 5 cm) and 4.7 × 2.4 in (12 × 6 cm). The 6x4 looks right on a small screen, while a large pergola calls for the 12x6 so the beam doesn't get lost at a distance. For large projects we also make custom lengths.
How is a beam different from a Grooved Panel?
It comes down to shape and where it goes. Grooved Panel is a grooved, nearly flat board that fastens to a wall or ceiling and shows only one face. The beam is hollow, like a rectangular tube. It stands free, shows on every side, and is used to build pergolas and privacy screens. Both come in the same 12 colors.
How much shade does a beam pergola give?
Partial shade, like a tree. The beams block some of the sun and let the rest through, and the space stays open and airy. How much shade you get depends on how closely the beams are spaced. For full shade or privacy, pair the pergola with a shade sail, curtains, a climbing vine or a privacy screen on the side facing the street or the neighbors.
How are they installed?
They mount over a support frame built by the installer or a steel fabricator, depending on the project. The beam is hollow and takes an aluminum insert for stiffness. It attaches with brackets and galvanized screws that don't go through the visible face. End caps close off the beam ends, finish the look and protect the cut from the weather. Ask us for the Decorative Beams installation guide, and we'll include it with your quote.
Can they be used indoors?
No. We sell and recommend Decorative Beams for outdoor use only, on pergolas, privacy screens, facades and entrances exposed to sun and rain. The Max Shield cap is built for the weather, so indoors you'd be paying for protection you don't need. They're designed and tested for outdoor use.
What maintenance do they need?
A pressure wash with mild soap, and that's it. Unlike natural wood, which needs stain or sealer every 12 to 18 months outdoors, they never need staining, sealing or repainting. The Max Shield cap is co-extruded with the beam (it isn't paint), so there's no coating to peel or flake over the years.
What colors do they come in?
12 colors, the same as Wall Cladding and Grooved Panel. Six are stock colors: IPE, Teka, Incienso, Chesnut, Antique and Mocha. The other six are made to order, with a 200-piece minimum: Maple, Mahogany, Ash Gray, Dark Gray, Obsidiana and Off-white. If your project calls for a different color, we can match a custom color to a Pantone code, starting at 700 pieces.
Do you deliver to Texas?
Yes. We make Decorative Beams in Monterrey, Mexico, and can deliver by truck to the border, to Laredo, or straight to your yard or job site anywhere in Texas. Made-to-order colors start at 200 pieces per beam size. Tell us the sizes, colors and volume you need, and we'll plan the order with you.
